As much as Target and Pinterest remind me that fall season has been here for two weeks now, I need to actually see piles of those charming pumpkins before I get into the fall season. Only then do I start thinking about hearty, comforting foods and oh yes, the scent of pumpkin spice in the air. It’s been too long.

Apple Pie Spice Cupcakes and Teacakes – one batter, two ways
Apple season is here! I have been wanting to make something “apple-y” for a couple of weeks now since varieties have been arriving at the farmers market. There is so much to make with apples for breakfast, sweet, and savory AND these apple pie spiced cupcakes and teacakes (!) that I started thinking about piling a wheelbarrow full of apples into my trunk and all its’ apple baking glory (channeling Laura Ingels from Little House on the Prarie but without the car, of course, give me a minute).
Simple End of Summer Peach Arugula Salad
Summer stone fruit has nearly run its’ course, which I take cue overstuffing my farmer’s markets bag (lucky to have this in southern California) without a care in the world as to what I’m going to do with them.
Stone fruit: they have a way of figuring these things out like ending up in this simple salad, or here or here. Though I’m a sucker for fruit desserts, I will admit sometimes there’s nothing better than leaning over the kitchen sink (preferably an empty sink) eating a big fat peach with its’ juices dripping down my chin, or arm, as I take a minute to enjoy the moment.
Poppy Seed Challah for Rosh Hashanah
The high holiday, Rosh Hashanah, is at sundown Sunday night and thought to share this before my peach salad post (look out for that next) because it is that good and the holiday is a few days away. For those of you who have been missing challah, this post is for you. It’s been a number of years without challah for us which is why I’m so excited to share this with you!
Shrimp Tacos with apricot salsa fresca and avocado crema {gluten free, dairy free, soy free}
My boys love tacos, so do I… especially shrimp tacos. Tell me you love tacos, if you do you’re gonna LOVE this! My take is with apricots and a mean avocado cream sauce I call crema just to make it sound fancy.
Going out for some tacos at our local Mexican place is not so easy when allergies are involved — too many risks of contamination with all the flour and cheese lying around so I make them at home and let me tell you they are easy to make with just some prep work for the toppings. Even if you can eat all the gluten, and dairy with no problem you will still want to shovel eat this right up.
Easy Cherry Quinoa Salad + Honey Ginger Dressing
Michael and Ely (my twin boys) started school today (5th grade already!), Mr. teenager started high school (yikes!) last week. With all three in school now I decided to take a breather for a minute to enjoy some quiet time sitting outside, slowly sipping my americano and letting the sounds of nature consume me.
Blueberry Galette
Strawberry Shortcakes
Most of the past four weeks have been all about our move. More and more boxes to tape up. More and more boxes to label and color code. More and more … it felt like preparing for our move would never end. And then there was the actual move July 1st. Having a few celebrations squeezed into the ruckus was a much-needed reprieve. Laughter, company and dessert is the best remedy for times like this. We had a middle school graduation, twins’ 11th birthday, and father’s day to celebrate. Thank goodness for celebrations, because packing is a pain in the ass. Strategically fitting all the odds and ends that one (ahem) accumulates requires some serious Tetris skills and patience. For those of you who move often, I feel for you.
Blueberry Cornmeal Cake
My husband loves a good piece of cake with his coffee for breakfast. His breakfast-of-choice for many years, pretty much every morning. That was before we married and my heckling him about eating a healthier breakfast like oatmeal or avocado on toast. Not much fun, but I do want to keep him around a long time.
Potato Green Bean Salad {gluten free, dairy free, soy free, vegan}
Wait! Before you balk at this potato salad with all the green beans, I must tell you it is worth giving a try. Seriously, stick with me here I wouldn’t steer you wrong.
When I first tasted my friend Lauren’s potato salad I knew she meant serious business. Before that, I wondered why the heck there are green vegetables in her potato salad, not very common, and certainly not the type I’m accustomed to. I mean, how do green beans contribute anything to a good old-fashioned potato salad. But as friends do, we give it a try and hope for the best. And the best it was.
